On Jan. 8, 1908, The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports on two possible cases of bubonic plague.

1873: William Lunalilo is elected king by the legislature after sweeping the popular vote.

1884: Princess Kekaulike, governess of the island of Hawai'i and sister of Queen Kapi'olani, dies at age 40.

1916: Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports a measles epidemic is sweeping the Islands

1932: The body of Joseph Kahahawai, one of the Massie case defendants, is found wrapped in a sheet in the backseat of an automobile near Hanauma Bay.

1983: The lave flow from Kilauea Volcano's eruption begins edging close to populated areas of lower Puna. Royal Gardens is ordered evacuated.

1987: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closes above 2,000 for the first time.
