Helicopter destroyed in Maui crash

By Mike Gordon

A tour helicopter carrying six people crashed near Hana, Maui, this morning. All on board survived, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said.

The Sunshine Helicopters flight went down about 8 a.m., said Mike Fergus, a spokesman in the FAA's Seattle office. The exact location was not immediately available.

Fergus said the pilot appeared to have suffered a broken leg. That was the most serious injury, he said.

The helicopter was destroyed but there was no fire.

It was the second time a Maui tour helicopter got in trouble in less than a week.

Last Thursday, a Blue Hawaiian Helicopters tour flight made a "precautionary landing" in Honokohau Valley after its pilot reported engine failure. None of the six people aboard the Eurocopter EC130 was seriously hurt, although the FAA reported that two passengers suffered minor injuries.
