The Saturday, Jan. 11, 1873, edition reported on the election of Prince Lunalilo as king the previous Wednesday.

1895: Royalist rebellion continues, but many rebels are arrested.

1918: Hackfeld & Co. drops all associations with Germany and becomes an American firm.

1928: Kilauea erupts. A series of avalanches in Halema'uma'u are reported.

1934: Six Navy planes set a world record for aviation after completing a nonstop mass-formation flight from San Francisco to Pearl Harbor.

1935: Amelia Earhart takes off from Wheeler Field en route to the Oakland airport. She is the first woman to fly solo from Hawai'i to California.

1947: The civilian production administration approves construction of a new Kaimuki high school for $250,000.

1960: United Airlines announces it will begin DC-8 jet service to Hawai'i on March 14.
