Boosted by sharp shooting and strong bench play, Iolani's boys basketball team won its 58th consecutive Interscholastic League of Honolulu game last night with a shocking 62-45 rout of visiting Punahou.

The four-time defending state champion Raiders, who have not lost in the ILH since late in the 2001 season, improved to 11-6 overall and 3-0 in league play. Punahou, which snapped Iolani's 105-game win streak against Hawai'i opponents in a non-league game last month, fell to 14-4 and 2-1.

Vinny Nip scored a game-high 22 points and Kawika Shoji added 13 points, three blocks and two assists for the Raiders. Iolani also got 16 combined points from its reserves, who came in periodically five at a time.

"The second unit played great," said Nip, a fourth-year senior guard. "They picked up the intensity and gave us time to rest without losing a beat. There was no letdown — in fact, they boosted us."

That was especially true in the first half, when the Raiders' bench outscored the Buffanblu reserves 13-4 en route to a 28-22 lead. Ryan Dung hit two 3-pointers and fellow reserve Case Miyahira added a trey to lead the second unit's effort.

"We have 15 guys on this team, and every day in practice we split them up into groups of five — white (jerseys), black (jerseys) and skins," Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi said. "And it's a dogfight; every unit is close to the other. It's good preparation for games like this."

Iolani then began the third period with a 12-0 run and stretched the lead to 45-28 one minute into the final quarter.

"They're definitely capable of scoring in bunches like that, and they were absolutely in a rhythm tonight," Punahou coach Greg Tacon said. "And it wasn't just one guy; it was all of them. They shot better than we did, they out-hustled us, they played better defense ... they just did everything better than us and dominated."

The closest the Buffanblu got in the closing minutes was 49-40 with 2:48 remaining, after Danny Cho's 3-pointer. But the Raiders sank 10 of 14 free throws down the stretch to seal it.

Miah Ostrowski led Punahou with 15 points, three steals and three assists, and Cho added 14 points and two steals. Buffanblu center Spencer McLachlin, one of their top offensive weapons at 6 feet 7, was held scoreless for the game's first 28 minutes and finished with just two points.

"We tried to put physical, strong guys on him who can also move, and that can make it tough on Spencer to post up or come out to the perimeter," Mugiishi said.

Jon Takamura, Iolani's 6-2 starting center, contributed eight points, six rebounds, two steals and an assist.
