On the morning of Jan. 12, 1935, Amelia Earhart's historic solo flight across the Pacific was the main news of the day. |
1896: The First Methodist Church opens at the corner of Beretania and Miller streets. Methodists had been meeting in Honolulu since 1894. The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reported in its story that there was a noticeable increase in the number of "church edifices."
1900: Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports that the Rapid Transit Co. has laid tram rails on King Street "to much public excitement."
1903: The Gaelic arrives with the first group of Koreans to work on sugar plantations.
1925: Three Martin bombers from the Army carry that day's Honolulu Advertiser to North Kohala in less than three hours to a new landing field at Hawi. The flight was an attempt to prove a need for commercial aviation in the Islands.
1935: Amelia Earhart lands in Oakland after an 18-hour, 17-minute flight from O'ahu.
