Charges dropped in shooting case

Advertiser Staff

Prosecutors yesterday dropped charges against a 76-year-old man stemming from a Dec. 29 shooting at Tracks Beach in Nanakuli.

Glenn J. "Lionel" Sequin was released before his scheduled preliminary hearing at District Court on charges of attempted second-degree murder and multiple firearm offenses, including being a felon in possession.

"We reviewed evidence and reached the conclusion there has to be further investigation," Ho-nolulu Prosecuting Attorney Peter Carlisle said. "Right now, there are no charges against him ... no preliminary set in the future."

Carlisle would not comment on what the "further investigation" involves.

Sequin was charged Jan. 6 for allegedly shooting Irmagene Cooper, 30, in a dispute involving the theft of a drill. Cooper was treated at The Queen's Medical Center for a wound to the shoulder.

Sequin, who has 28 convictions dating to 1951, pleaded guilty in 1992 to manslaughter, drug offenses related to dealing crystal methamphetamine, and firearm offenses.

The manslaughter plea was for the 1990 death of Leo Tuaoa of 'Ewa Beach. Tuaoa was shot at Sequin's Makaha home. Tuaoa's killing reportedly was tied to a dispute over control of drug operations on the Wai'anae Coast, Waipahu and 'Ewa Beach. Sequin served 11 years in prison after the plea agreement.
