1895: Robert Wilcox, leader of a royalist rebellion against the Republic of Hawai'i, is captured by government forces.
1907: Lava from the Mauna Loa eruption that began on Jan. 9 is reported to be flowing toward Kona.
1942: The Sunday labor law is suspended in Hawai'i and businesses are allowed to remain open seven days a week. The change was to compensate businesses for the loss of night trade.
1969: Twenty-six crewmen of the U.S. aircraft carrier Enterprise are killed in flight-deck explosions when the vessel is 70 miles southwest of Hawai'i.
1993: Gov. John Waihee decides not to fly the U.S. flag over the state Capitol District buildings for the four days marking the centennial observance of the overthrow of the monarchy.
