On Jan. 15, 1894, the Hawaiian Electric Co. placed a notice that from that day on, it would supply incandescent electric lighting.

1907: Lava from Mauna Loa eruption almost reaches the ocean. The main flow is over the flow of 1887.

1926: The YWCA announces that bids will be opened Jan. 25 for the construction of the Richards Street building, to be designed by Julia Morgan.

1949: Fire destroys St. Patrick's School in Kaimuki.

1973: Citing progress in peace negotiations, President Richard Nixon announces the suspension of offensive action in North Vietnam.

2002: Honolulu pulls out of the state's controversial photo traffic-enforcement system before it even gets started on city streets. The city says it was concerned about public reaction to the state "van cam" program begun just two weeks earlier.

2003: Gladys Kamakakuokalani 'Ainoa Brandt — the revered Hawaiian kupuna who was influential in everything from the revival of Hawaiian traditions to the shakeup of the Bishop Estate/Kamehameha Schools trustee system and the creation of the University of Hawai'i Center for Hawaiian Studies — dies at the age of 96.
