A 67-year-old man who apparently drove his car into murky waters near the Waikiki Yacht Club yesterday afternoon died after he and his teenaged passenger were trapped in eight to 10 feet of water, police said.

The man was pronounced dead at Straub Clinic & Hospital, said Honolulu Police Sgt. John Agno. The 15-year-old girl was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in serious condition, but she was stable, according to Eddy Fujioka, district supervisor for the city's emergency medical services.

Agno said investigators were trying to determine how the man and girl were related.

The man, who was the registered owner of the 1993 Cadillac, had been drinking at the Waikiki Yacht Club earlier, Agno said. Police believe he was at the wheel. As the driver tried to leave the parking lot, the Cadillac hit two cars, then reversed and drove over the edge of the parking lot and into the water, Agno said.

The girl called 911 on her cell phone. And a good Samaritan dived into the water as 911 dispatchers were sending firefighters to the yacht club, said Hono-lulu Fire Capt. Kenison Tejada.

The rescuer pulled the 15-year-old onto a nearby catamaran, where she was breathing and talking. The man was prepared to dive in again when firefighters began arriving at 5:29 p.m., Tejada said.

Firefighters pulled out the man, who was taken to Straub Clinic & Hospital in critical condition, Fujioka said.

"Initially, when they found him, he was in cardiac arrest," Fujioka said. He estimated the man was under water five minutes.
