Surf on the rise on north-facing shores

Advertiser Staff

Rising surf along the north- and west-facing shores of Ni'ihau, Kaua'i, O'ahu and Moloka'i, as well as north-facing shores on Maui, is expected to grow even larger tonight, according to the National Weather Service.

Swells from the northwest have resulted in a high-surf advisory along most north- and west-facing shores throughout the island chain that will remain at advisory levels into tonight, Weather Service forecasters said.

An even larger swell is expected to roll in overnight, resulting in a change from high surf advisories to an outright warnings, forecasters said. The high surf is expected to continue for the next two days.

Surf along north-facing shores is expect to reach face heights of 10 to 15 feet today and continue at that level until early Wednesday.

A high surf advisory means waves along the affected coastlines will be higher than normal. The Weather Service is advising sightseers to stay out of the water and well away from the shore break to avoid hazardous wave action and strong rip currents.
