The Pacific Commercial Advertiser's Jan. 16, 1916 report on the Outdoor Circle included a photo of the group's executive committee.

1893: More than a thousand of Queen Lili'uokalani's supporters pack Palace Square to hear Hawaiian orators exhort them to remain loyal. Several blocks away, annexationists conduct their rally. U.S. troops were sent ashore from the USS Boston.

1906: 1,700 Japanese workers strike the Oahu Sugar Co. plantation at Waipahu over pay and other issues.

1907: Mauna Loa eruption strengthens. One flow reaches the ocean. No lava has reached the Kona district but the flow covers 35 miles of wasteland.

1916: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports on the fourth anniversary celebration of the Outdoor Circle. "Nearly 500 women discuss plans for city beautiful," the headline read.

1953: The Mayor Wright Homes project is dedicated.

1993: Stan Sheriff, the University of Hawai'i athletic director for 10 years, dies at age 60.

2003: Striking nurses at The Queen's Medical Center ratify a new contract They had been on strike since Dec. 3, 2002.

2004: 14-year-old Michelle Wie misses the cut by one shot at the Sony Open. She was the fourth and by far the youngest female to play in a PGA Tour event.
