1917: Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports a beach boulevard is proposed to run the length of Waikiki.
1950: The Honolulu Advertiser reports the House Un-American Activities Committee will hold hearings in Hawai'i "regarding the extent, character and scope of alleged un-American propaganda activities."
1953: Bishop Estate announces a $3.5 million residential project in Wai'alae-Kahala, the final part of a $20 million development in the area. The project was to eventually also include a shopping center, school and park.
1991: President George Bush orders the U.S. into war against Iraq over its invasion of Kuwait.
1993: Thousands mark the centennial of the loss of the monarchy in a march to Iolani Palace. Hawaiian leaders call on their people to begin working together for greater control over Hawaiian lands.
1994: A 6.6 earthquake rocks Los Angeles, killing more than 40 people.
1995: More than 4,000 people are killed when a 7.2 earthquake hits western Japan.
