1955: Honolulu Board of Supervisors approves one-way traffic for downtown. Effective March 1, traffic on King Street is to be one-way Waikiki-bound and Beretania is to be one-way 'ewa-bound. Various connecting streets would also become one-way,
1966: A master plan is unveiled for a multimillion-dollar downtown Cultural Plaza "which is designed to revitalize the central business district, promote tourism and trade and set an example for future redevelopment of the area."
1970: The Rt. Rev. E. Lani Hanchett is installed as Episcopal bishop of Hawai'i. He is the first Episcopal bishop of Hawaiian ancestry.
1980: Gov. George Ariyoshi signs an order forbidding gasoline purchases of less than $8 in an attempt to prevent long lines and "topping off" during a strike against Chevron U.S.A., Hawai'i's largest gasoline supplier.
