U.S. volleyball looks at three

Three collegiate women's volleyball players from Hawai'i participated in the U.S. national team tryouts.

Liberos Shellane Ogoshi (Hofstra, Roosevelt) and Kekai Crabbe (Pepperdine, Kamehameha), and middle blocker Lecca Roberts (Pepperdine, Seabury Hall) worked out last weekend at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Sixty-eight athletes were invited to the tryouts for the national team and associated training programs.

FOOTBALL

  • Utah senior defensive back Kawika Casco (Lahainaluna '00) earned the "Red Helmet Award," given to the player with the highest passion for the game at the team's awards banquet.

    TRACK AND FIELD

  • Washington senior Lauran Dignam (Iolani '02 of 'Aina Haina) placed fourth in the 200 meters (25.41 seconds) at the UW Indoor Preview meet Saturday.

    She also helped UW's 4x400 meter relay team win in 3:52.01.

    MEN'S VOLLEYBALL

  • Pepperdine junior outside hitter Jon Grobe (Iolani '02) had 14 kills, two aces, five digs and four blocks in a 30-23, 30-20, 26-30, 32-30 win over Pacific Saturday.

    Redshirt freshman outside hitter Eric Liebert (Punahou '04) had five kills, three digs and seven blocks.

    Grobe had 17 kills and 12 digs in a 30-26, 30-18, 29-31, 30-24 win over Stanford Friday.

  • UC Irvine freshman libero Brent Asuka (Iolani '05 of 'Aiea) had a team-high seven digs in a 32-30, 30-28, 30-24 upset over second-ranked UCLA Friday.

  • Cal State Northridge sophomore outside hitter Isaac Kneubuhl (Kamehameha '03) had 10 kills in a 30-28, 30-25, 26-30, 30-25 loss to Brigham Young Saturday.

    BYU junior opposite Jonathan Charette (Pearl City '03) had nine kills.

  • Lindenwood (St. Charles, Mo.) freshman outside hitter Devin Shiroma (Damien '05) had 11 kills in a 30-17, 30-19, 30-21 win over Stevens Institute of TechnologySunday.

    SWIMMING

  • San Diego senior Ashley Swart (Kaiser '02 of Hawai'i Kai) won the 200 freestyle (1:53.92), 100 freestyle (53.58) and 500 freestyle (5:08.10) in a dual meet against Nevada Saturday.

    The Toreros' 200 freestyle relay, which included Swart and junior Leoho'onani Reyes (Kamehameha of Kaunakakai), won in 1:42.23.

    Nevada sophomore Megan Rose (Kealakehe of Kailua, Kona) placed second in the 100 backstroke (1:00.94), and sister Ashley Rose, a USD senior (Kealakehe '02 of Kailua, Kona), finished fourth (1:01.14).

    Ashley Rose placed sixth in the 50 freestyle (26.30).

  • Air Force senior Carly Omizo (Iolani of Kailua) won the 100 breaststroke (1:07.50) and 200 breaststroke (2:31.15) in a dual meet with Northern Colorado Saturday.

    MEN'S BASKETBALL

  • Colorado School of Mines (Golden, Colo.) freshman guard Kyle Pape (Iolani '05) scored 12 points in an 80-64 victory over CSU-Pueblo Saturday.

  • Brigham Young junior guard Rashaun Broadus (Mililani '02) scored nine points in an 82-72 loss to UNLV Jan. 11.

  • Pacific (Forest Grove, Ore.) senior guard Branden Kawazoe (Waiakea of Hilo) scored a game-high 22 points, including seven 3-pointers, in a 73-69 loss to Willamette Friday.

    He scored 16 points in a 65-60 loss to Lewis & Clark Saturday.

    WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

  • Pacific senior center Tina Sanerivi (Farrington of Waipahu) scored a game- and season-high 19 points in an 85-72 loss to UC Irvine Sunday. She also had eight rebounds.
