Butterbean beats Cabbage in mixed martial arts event

Eric "Butterbean" Esch defeated Hilo's Wesley "Cabbage" Correira in the main event of the Rumble On The Rock 8 mixed martial arts card before a crowd of about 6,500 at Blaisdell Arena Friday night.

Correira broke his right arm during the fight, and the bout was stopped after two rounds based on the advice of the ringside doctors. It was scheduled for three five-minute rounds.

The two heavyweights exchanged numerous blows throughout the first two rounds, although neither gained a significant advantage.

Esch weighed 394 pounds, 133 more than the 261-pound Correira. Esch improved his mixed martial arts record to 2-1-1. He also has a boxing record of 71-7-4. Correira dropped to 17-9.

The main event highlighted an eight-bout card that included a welterweight (175 pounds)elimination tournament.

In the eight-man tournament, New Mexico's Carlos Condit upset Renato "Charuto" Verissimo de Oliveira with a stunning first-round knockout; Japan's Yushin Okami won by disqualification in the first round when Brazil's Anderson Silva, ranked No. 4 in the world, used an illegal kick; Jake Shields of California earned a three-round unanimous decision over Minnesota's Dave Menne; and Frank Trigg of New York defeated Hawaii's Ronald Jhun by unanimous decision.

The four quarterfinal winners -- Condit, Okami, Shields and Trigg -- advanced to the semifinals at the next ROTR show on April 7.

In the preliminary bouts:

-- Heavyweight Scott Junk (1-2) of Kailua earned his first professional victory with a first-round TKO of Honolulu's Vilatonu Vonakalaifi (4-1). The referee stopped the bout 3:32 into the round when Junk worked his way on top of Vonakalaifi and unleashed a series of unanswered punches.

-- Hilo's Ross Ebanez (10-3) defeated Arizona's Josh Donahue (5-3) by TKO, 1:38 into the first round of a 170-pound match.

-- Kengo Ura (4-3) of Japan beat Kailua's Mike Malone (1-5) with an ankle lock, 3:24 into the first round of a 195-pound bout.
