1891: King Kalakaua dies in San Francisco. Word of the death would reach Hawai'i on Jan. 29 when the ship carrying the king's remains arrived draped in mourning.
1898: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports that the new Nu'uanu Pali road, linking Honolulu with Windward O'ahu, is almost completed and soon will be turned over to the government for public use.
1900: A fire set to rid Chinatown of plague burns out of control. No one is killed but most of Chinatown is destroyed.
1938: The War Department announces plans to move an Army air squadron to Hawai'i to build up air forces in the mid-Pacific.
1958: The U.S. Court of Appeals in San Francisco reverses the conviction of the Hawaii 7. The defendants in that case had been convicted of conspiring to teach and advocate the overthrow of the government. Defendants include Jack Hall, regional director of the ILWU; Koji Ariyoshi, editor of the Honolulu Record; and John Reinecke, a former Farrington High School teacher.
1998: The Kamehameha Schools Alumni Association Board of Presidents supports a court petition to remove Bishop Estate trustee Lokelani Lindsey from the five-member board overseeing the school.
