Eric "Butterbean" Esch defeated Hilo's Wesley "Cabbage" Correira in the main event of the Rumble On The Rock 8 mixed martial arts card last night.

Correira broke his right arm during the fight, and the bout was stopped after two rounds based on the advice of the ringside doctors. It was scheduled for three five-minute rounds.

A crowd of about 6,500 at the Blaisdell Center Arena watched the eight-bout card.

The heavyweights exchanged numerous blows throughout the first two rounds, although neither gained a significant advantage.

Esch weighed 394 pounds, 133 more than the 261-pound Correira. Esch improved his mixed martial arts record to 2-1-1. He also has a boxing record of 71-7-4. Correira dropped to 17-9.

New Mexico's Carlos Condit upset Renato "Charuto" Verissimo de Oliveira with a stunning first-round knockout to highlight the quarterfinals of the welterweight (175 pounds) tournament.

Condit caught de Oliveira with a knee to the head in the opening seconds of the bout, and then finished it with punches. The referee stopped the bout 17 seconds after it started.

Condit improved to 14-2. De Oliveira, who is originally from Brazil but trains in Honolulu, dropped to 5-3. He was ranked No. 6 in the world.

De Oliveira was not the only victim of an upset. In the first quarterfinal bout, Japan's Yushin Okami won by disqualification. Brazil's Anderson Silva, who is ranked No. 4 in the world, was disqualified because of an illegal kick, 2:33 into the first round.

Okami was on both knees when Silva kicked him in the face. According to ROTR rules, kicking is not allowed against a downed opponent, and Okami was considered down at the time.

Okami was given time to recover, but the ringside doctors did not allow him to continue. Okami improved to 14-2, while Silva dropped to 13-4.

In the second quarterfinal, Jake Shields of California earned a three-round unanimous decision over Minnesota's Dave Menne. All three judges scored the bout 30-27.

Shields dominated all three rounds, but could never put a finishing maneuver on Menne. Shields improved to 10-4, while Menne dropped to 38-13.

In the fourth quarterfinal, Frank Trigg of New York defeated Hawai'i's Ronald Jhun by unanimous decision. The bout consisted of three five-minute rounds.

Trigg, who is ranked No. 5 in the world, improved to 13-4. Jhun dropped to 23-16-2.

The four quarterfinal winners — Condit, Okami, Shields and Trigg — advanced to the semifinals at the next ROTR show on April 7.

In the preliminary bouts:

  • Heavyweight: Scott Junk (1-2) of Kailua earned his first professional victory with a first-round TKO of Honolulu's Vilatonu Vonakalaifi (4-1). The referee stopped the bout 3:32 into the round when Junk worked his way on top of Vonakalaifi and unleashed a series of unanswered punches.

  • 170 pounds: Hilo's Ross Ebanez (10-3) defeated Arizona's Josh Donahue (5-3) by TKO, 1:38 into the first round.

  • 195 pounds: Kengo Ura (4-3) of Japan beat Kailua's Mike Malone (1-5) with an ankle lock, 3:24 into the first round.
