1859: Mauna Loa erupts, with fountaining reported as high as 500 feet.
1933: Island composer Sonny Cunha dies at age 54.
1936: Public Utilities Commission gives Honolulu Rapid Transit Co. permission to extend bus service to 'Alewa Heights, Kalihi and Kalihi-Kai.
1960: Lava flow destroys the tiny settlement of Koa'e on the Big Island. Homes are also destroyed in Kapoho.
1973: President Nixon announces a cease-fire in Vietnam and the return of all U.S. troops and prisoners of war within 60 days.
1978: Workers in the Construction and General Laborers Union, the state’s second-largest construction union, with 3,000 members, strike. Other unions honor the picket lines, shutting down the construction industry in Hawai'i.
