Reunion set to honor ex-UH coach Tanaka

Former University of Hawai'i baseball coach Toku Tanaka will be honored at a reunion luncheon Feb. 12 at Stan Sheriff Center's hospitality suite.

Tanaka coached UH in 1950 and 1951, took a sabbatical, and returned to coach the Rainbows from 1955-59. In his first two years, UH played in the Hawai'i Winter League at Moi'ili'ili Field. The Rainbows were members of the Hawai'i Baseball League when Tanaka did his second stint as coach.

The reunion is being organized by former players Bob Kagamida, Les Matsubara, John Nakamura, Wayne Sakamoto, Alan Yamamoto, Hank Kibota and George Anzai with help from retired UH sports information director Eddie Inouye.

The reunion is from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets are priced at $30 per person. For information on tickets, call Kagamida (737-7752), Nakamura (235-5824) or Matsubara (988-3402).

COMPETITION TODAY

The Interscholastic League of Honolulu will host a cheerleading competition today at Kamehameha's Kekuhaupi'o Gymnasium at 6 p.m. Participating schools will be Punahou, Iolani and Kamehameha with JV and varsity divisions.
