On Jan. 24, 1900, the Pacific Commercial Advertiser ran photos of the aftermath of the Jan. 20 Chinatown fire. This shows the ruins of Kaumakapili Church.

1889: Robert Louis Stevenson arrives aboard the yacht Casco after a 29-day voyage from Tahiti.

1895: Former Queen Lili'uokalani signs an abdication document.

1942: A special court of inquiry into America's lack of preparedness for the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor placed much of the blame on Rear Adm. Husband E. Kimmel and Lt. Gen. Walter C. Short.

1958: Hawaii Supermarket Association announces it will drop its plan for supermarkets to close on Wednesdays in favor of a new schedule that will open member markets on Wednesday afternoons and evenings and reduce Sunday shopping hours.

1973: Del Monte Corp. announces it will join Castle & Cooke in phasing out pineapple production on Moloka'i.

2003: The Department of Homeland Security officially begins operations.
