Annual humpback whale counts begin this weekend

Advertiser Staff

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has scheduled its annual series of humpback whale counts, starting this weekend, and is looking for volunteers.

The counts will be held on the last Saturday of this month, February and March at more than 65 sites around O'ahu, Kaua'i, and Hawai'i. The dates are Saturday and Feb. 25 and March 25.

Maui counts are conducted independently by the Pacific Whale Foundation.

Anyone interested in participating in the counts can register by calling (888) 559-4253 ext. 253 for the Big Island, 397-2651 ext. 253 for O'ahu, and (808) 246-2860 for Kaua'i.

Kaua'i volunteers are asked to participate in a training session and lecture. Training is not required for those on O'ahu and the Big Island.
