Another day in Interscholastic League of Honolulu boys basketball, another overtime thriller.

Four-time defending state champion Iolani — ranked No. 2 in The Advertiser's Top 10 poll of coaches and media — held off No. 4 Saint Louis, 61-58, in overtime last night before a tense crowd of about 600 at McCabe Gym.

In what is becoming routine in the ultra-balanced ILH, the game was filled with action and drama from start to finish, and even afterward.

Case Miyahira's two free throws gave the Raiders a 60-55 lead with 18 seconds remaining in overtime. But Scott Smith scored on a layup and was fouled with seven ticks left, and his free throw cut it to 60-58.

Iolani's Kawika Shoji was fouled before the ensuing inbounds pass and made one of two free throws to make it 61-58. The Crusaders quickly advanced the ball into the frontcourt and Jeremiah Masoli's 3-point attempt glanced off the rim.

Teammate Cameron Bayne then chased down the ball near the top of the key, turned and swished a 23-footer, but he released it one heartbeat after the horn sounded and the referees waved it off.

"Can you ask for any more?" Raiders coach Mark Mugiishi said. "(Bayne's shot) was maybe 0.5 seconds late."

The close finish was symbolic of the tight league title chase among Kamehameha (7-0 ILH), Iolani (6-1), Punahou (4-3), Saint Louis (4-3) and Maryknoll (2-4). Together, those five teams have played a combined six overtimes, with just over half the regular season completed.

That's not counting several other games decided by five points or less, including the Raiders' 60-57 victory over the Crusaders just 19 days ago.

Last night, the teams raced up and down the court in the first half, only to go into the break tied at 34. The defenses tightened in the third period, after which Saint Louis led 41-40.

The Crusaders took a 49-46 lead with 1:11 remaining in regulation after Masoli's free throw, but Iolani tied it 11 seconds later on Shoji's 3-pointer from the corner. The Raiders made a steal and called a timeout with six ticks left, but could not get a shot off before the horn.

But Iolani, which lost to Kamehameha 39-37 on Saturday for its first ILH defeat since the 2001 season, finally took control late in the overtime period and barely hung on.

"Everyone saw that we lost a game, so that makes every team more confident," said Shoji, a senior and third-year letterman who finished with a game-high 23 points, including four 3-pointers. "We just had to refocus as a team and it took every bit of that focus to come through tonight."

Bayne led Saint Louis with 20 points.
