Stadium authority rejects alcohol ban

The Aloha Stadium Authority today voted down a plan that would have banned beer and alcohol consumption in the stadium's 8,000-stall parking lot before, during and after regular-season collegiate sporting events.

Authority chairman Kevin Chong Kee said the board is looking to revisit the issue, which, he said, requires further study. Another task force with more members was set up to investigate the issue further.

Authority members said the ban would hurt tailgating tradition, discriminate against University of Hawai'i fans, was an inconsistent policy and would be difficult to enforce.

Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona spearheaded the alcohol ban in August and called it a "monumental statement" for public safety and curbing underage drinking and alcohol-fueled misbehavior at the stadium.
