Hawaii sweeps UC Irvine in volleyball

Jose Jose Delgado hammered a season-high 17 kills to power seventh-ranked Hawai'i to a 30-21, 30-22, 34-32 volleyball victory over No. 4 UC Irvine Friday night in the Stan Sheriff Center.

A crowd of 2,440 watched the Warriors avenge Wednesday's night three-game loss and improve to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

The Anteaters fell to 6-3 and 3-2.

In the rematch, the Warriors were able to solve their problems in the serve-and-pass phase, as well as put a lid on opposite hitter Matt Webber.

Webber, whose shots exceed 70 mph, could not control his accuracy early. In Game 1, he scored more points for UH — four errors on attacks and two on serves — than he produced. By the end of Game 2, Webber had three kills and eight errors in 16 swings.

"It was all my fault," Webber said. "I got good sets, and I couldn't do anything with them."

He finished with nine kills in 26 swings, but hit .000.

On the other side of the net, Delgado rebounded from a difficult opening match to blast shots from all directions. On Wednesday, Delgado was pulled in the middle of Game 1 because of erractic play. Last night, Delgado hammered eight kills (no errors) and hit .615 in the first game.

Lauri Hakala contributed 12 loud kills for the Warriors.

The Warriors scored 36 points on plays initiated by their serves. The Anteaters scored 17 points when they served.

Jayson Jablonsky led the Anteaters with 17 kills.

The Warriors have a bye next week.
