UH's Toiaivao suspended for remainder of season

Advertiser Staff

University of Hawai'i junior Alofa Toiaivao was suspended for the remainder of the season by women's basketball coach Jim Bolla, the school announced today.

Toiaivao, who was the team's leading scorer, and two other players were suspended for violating team rules during a road trip last week. Sophomore guard Saundra Cariaga and junior forward Pam Tambini were reinstated on Wednesday after a one-game suspension.

Cariaga and Toiaivao told The Advertiser earlier this week the suspension was a result of violating the team's 11 p.m. curfew Saturday following a loss at Fresno, Calif.

Toiaivao also was assigned 30 hours of community service, UH said.

Cariaga and Tambini will take part in 10 hours of community service. They will be on one-year probation.

Toiaivao averaged 13.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.

UH has 10 regular season games and the Western Athletic Conference tournament remaining. The Rainbow Wahine play Nevada tomorrow night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
