CARNIVAL: FEB. 3-4

It's almost here — that annual malasadas/rides/games/ food/art extravaganza known as the Punahou Carnival, left. Here's what you need to know: The theme is "Carnivalot — Damsels & Dragons & Wizards, Oh My!"; admission is free (scrip will be sold to purchase goodies and for activities); the malasadas cost 50 cents each; all the other attractions will be back, including the fine-arts gallery, the white-elephant tent and entertainment. Expect to mingle with tons of people from around the island.

CONCERT: FEB. 3

Have a blast at the British Blues Explosion Tour, featuring legendary John Mayall, known as the godfather of British blues, and the Bluesbreakers. Joining in on the fun will be Kim Simmonds, guitarist and founding leader of the band Savoy Brown. Tickets are $40 advance, $50 at the door. Doors open at 8:15 p.m.

The tour also rocks the Kauai Memorial Theater Feb. 1, the Maui Arts & Cultural Center Feb. 2 and the Big Island's Palace Theatre Feb. 4.

STAGE: FEB. 3-19

The romantic comedy "Enchanted April" takes center stage next month at the Diamond Head Theatre. The play takes place in 1922, when two married British women holiday in Italy with an elderly spinster and a jaded young lady. Randl Ask directs. Tickets are $12-$42.

EXPO: FEB. 4-5

The two-day Hawaii Ocean Sports Expo features 160 ocean sports exhibits, free scuba lessons, fashion shows, educational seminars and guest speakers. Other special events include the Mega Super Bowl Party on Super Bowl Sunday and a scavenger hunt game. Advance tickets are $7 general and $4 children and seniors. At the door, admission is $10 general, $6 60 and older and ages 6-12, free for military and children younger than 6.

The festivities also include a pre-expo concert with Willie K and Inoa'ole at 7 p.m. Feb. 3. Tickets are $18 advance, $25 at the door.

CONCERT: FEB. 9

Hip-hop rap ensemble The Roots, above, comes to town to help celebrate Pro Bowl week. The Grammy Award-winning group from Philly has an album hit list that includes "Illadelph Halflife," "Things Fall Apart" and 2004's "The Tipping Point." DJs XL and Delve1der are also featured, and Jimmy Taco hosts. Tickets are $35, for 18 and older.

COMEDY: FEB. 11

A king-sized night of laughter is in store when the Laugh Factory presents "Da Ali'i of Comedy, Andy Bumatai." Funnyman Bumatai, left, is best known locally for his "All in the Ohana" TV special as well as gigs around town at Brew Moon and the Palace Showroom. Tickets are $25 advance and $30 at the door.

COMEDY: FEB. 14

Those with a love for laughter won't want to miss The Laugh Factory's "Da Laughrodisiac Show with Paul Ogata and Friends." Actor-comedian Ogata, below, who packed his laugh bags for fame and fortune on the Mainland, comes home for a Valentine's night comedy concert that also features Kento. Tickets are $55, and include a dinner buffet at 6 p.m.

CONCERT: FEB. 18

The world-renowned Kronos Quartet, left, offers an evening of contemporary works, including its take on "Flugufrelsarinn," a tune by the enigmatic Icelandic band Sigur Ros. The quartet is composed of, from left, John Sherba, violin; Jeffrey Zeigler, cello; David Harrington, violin; and Hank Dutt, viola. Tickets are $30 general, $18 students and Honolulu Symphony musicians.

CONCERT: FEB. 17

If you're hungry for some rock 'n' roll, you're in luck, because the all-acoustic sounds of Hot Tuna are rockin' this way. After starting out as a spinoff of Jefferson Airplane, members Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen, along with Barry Mitterhoff, bring forth a folk-blues rock sound. Tickets are $35 advance, $40 at the door, $50 gold circle seating. Doors open 8:15 p.m.
