Crime-prevention program at camp

Advertiser Staff

Ninety-three students, ages 10-17, from schools in Wai'anae, Waialua, Waipahu and Wahiawa will be at Camp Erdman this weekend as the YMCA of Honolulu kicks off its federally funded Rural Youth Crime Prevention Program on O'ahu.

A highlight of the weekend will be tackling the new Odyssey III Ropes Course, which at its highest point is 40 feet. The purpose of the ropes course is to impart lessons in trust, responsibility and facing one's fears.

After this weekend, participants go back to their communities and work a minimum of four hours a week with Rural Youth Crime Prevention Program staff. They will work on programs that help develop communication, problem-solving and team-building skills.

The 12-week program ends with another stay at Camp Erdman, in Mokule'ia.
