Kapolei's Santiago heads to Air Force

Advertiser Staff

Kapolei slotback Jon Santiago, whose accomplishments off the field are as impressive as they are on it, will play at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Hurricanes coach Darren Hernandez said.

Santiago was an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red West first-team all-star receiver and an Advertiser All-State second-team pick. He led the Hurricanes with 35 receptions, 671 receiving yards and six TD catches. He also rushed for 128 yards and one TD.

Hernandez said Santiago, who is 5 feet 8 and 160 pounds, has a 4.0 grade point average and is involved other activities besides sports in school.

"His grades are so good that they want him to go straight to the Academy," Hernandez said. "The good part is that he goes right in. ... Jon's a smaller guy who could use the redshirt year. He's a scat-back, a Chad Owens-type, electrifying playmaker. But his grades are high and his SAT is high. Ivy Leagues were inquiring about him."
