On Jan. 29, 1898, The Pacific Commercial Advertiser first reported on plans for what would become Moanalua Gardens.

1891 Lili'uokalani is proclaimed queen, succeeding King Kalakaua.

1913 Fire destroys Pahoa lumber mill on the Big Island.

1933 Adolf Hitler is appointed chancellor of Germany.

1953 The Bishop Estate announces plans for a subdivision in the Wai'alae Nui area.

1960 The Kilauea eruption continues. Five to seven fountains throwing lava 100 feet to 500 feet break out along the rift line northeast of the main Kapoho fountain, feeding two swift-moving fiery rivers headed toward the ocean.
