Seniors came through for the Mililani boys soccer team, making all five of their shots in the penalty-kicks portion to beat Kaiser in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association quarterfinal game.

Justin Iha, Dustin Shimatsu, Elan Morikawa, Josh Edelo and Michael Smith made their kicks for the Trojans, who beat Kaiser, 2-1, last night at Moanalua, including a 5-4 advantage on penalty kicks.

"I was so nervous. That was my first penalty kick," said Shimatsu, who also scored in regulation for Mililani. "But I felt confident."

Mililani (8-1-1), winner of the past four OIA titles, plays Moanalua (9-1-1) in one semifinal game at 5:15 p.m. at Kapolei Wednesday. Leilehua (8-2-1) and Kapolei (10-0-0) play in the other semifinal at 7 p.m.

All four have qualified for the state tournament. Kaiser (8-2-2) can earn the OIA's fifth berth if it wins its next two games.

Kaiser's Michael Kawajiri, Matthew Bush, Kyle Niiro and Thanh Bidwell made their penalty kicks.

The teams went into the penalty kicks portion of the game after tying 1-1 through 80 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods.

"At times we surged, at times they surged," Mililani co-head coach Jeff Yamamoto said. "I thought Kaiser did a fantastic job."

Mililani assistant coach Norman Beter said he chose seniors to take the kicks because "we prefer the older guys. They performed the best in practice."

Smith, the Trojans goalkeeper, was also the fifth shooter.

"We've been practicing penalty kicks the past couple of weeks," he said.

In regulation, Kaiser junior midfielder Myung Yoon scored on a corner kick from Bidwell in the 25th minute. Bidwell sent a low ball to the near post and Yoon deflected it into the goal.

"It was nice to score first, that's for sure," Kaiser coach Herb Schreiner said. "But you can't sit on a score like that against a Mililani team."

The Trojans tied the score in the 48th minute on Shimatsu's goal. Morikawa's 25-yard free kick from the right side found freshman forward Jordan Phanphongsa in the middle of the penalty box, and he dropped the ball to Shimatsu, who had an open look at the right post.

"Everyone crashes in, and whoever is there gets it," Shimatsu said.

Moanalua 2, Pearl City 1: Seniors Kenneth Ogata and Joey Nakamura scored for Na Menehune, and junior goalkeeper Bryan Fujiwara stopped a penalty kick.

Ogata scored in the 36th minute after beating a defender to the left. Nakamura scored the eventual game-winner in the 55th minute on a header off a corner kick from Jonathan Baba that sailed to the far post.

Pearl City's Cameron-Joshua Dela Cruz scored in the 26th minute.

Fujiwara blocked the penalty kick near the end of the game to preserve the victory.

"I was scared, but I read him," Fujiwara said. "I just looked at his feet. I was hyped. As soon as the final whistle blew, I was like, 'Yes, states.' "

Kapolei 6, Kalani 0: Curtis Kiyabu and Aaron Santiago each scored two goals, and Justin Malvar and Drew Geis each added one for the Hurricanes, who advanced to the OIA semifinals for the first time.

Leilehua 4, Kalaheo 0: Daniel Phelps scored twice, and Syd Tom and Josh Trusdale had a goal apiece for the Mules.

ILH GIRLS

Kamehameha 6, Pac-Five 1: Caycie Gusman scored two goals and Meleana Shim, Alyssa Chun, Jasmine Luke and Sanoe Souza each added one.

Tani Costa scored for the Wolfpack.

Punahou 7, Mid-Pacific 0: Lizzy Carlson, Carly Wachi and Sophie Merrifield each scored two goals, and Brittney Sanford contributed one.

Roosevelt freshman forward Alex Fowler scored in a 2-1 loss to Leilehua in a first-round OIA boy soccer tournament game Friday. The wrong goal scorer was credited in yesterday's editions of The Advertiser.
