Stench looming from treatment plant

Advertiser Staff

A major malfunction at the Kailua Wastewater Treatment Plant this weekend has created a foul odor that neighbors likened to cow pastures.

Myrna Junk, an Aikahi Gardens residents, said the smell was bad last week but is horrific today and has caused an allergy reaction.

Department of Health officials said the problem began when an air pressurization tank developed a hole in the beginning of the month and had to be ordered from Illinois.

The unit was replaced last week but didn't work properly, said Alec Wong, engineering supervisor for the DOH Clean Water Branch.

The city will have to order a new unit. Meantime, the city is trying to minimize the odor with deodorant, Wong said.
