Is it home-purging time? Consider these donation dos and don'ts from the book "Mission: Organization" and hgtv.com:

  • Do check beyond widely-known charities. An organization may seek office attire for women entering the work force or a nursing home may need blankets.

  • Don't donate items in poor condition. The charity will have to waste its resources discarding the items.

  • Don't drop off items the charity might not accept. Find out in advance what the organization will take.
