Arson fire closes Health Department building

By Curtis Lum

The state Department of Health's downtown headquarters will be closed to the public tomorrow after a fire tonight damaged the entryway to the agency's Punchbowl Street building. However, employees are asked to report to work.

Fire department officials said someone doused a flammable liquid at the entrance to the building and ignited the liquid at about 6:30 p.m. The fire was confined to the entrance to the building at 1250 Punchbowl St., but it did about $10,000 to $12,000 in damage.

Janice Okubo, department spokeswoman, said the building will be closed to the public tomorrow and reopen at 7:45 a.m. Thursday. Employees will be expected to report to work today.
