The death of Isle singer Alfred Apaka the day before was the banner story in The Advertiser Jan. 31, 1960.

1928: The Honolulu board of supervisors authorizes condemnation proceedings against Mrs. Victoria Ward to acquire the two pieces of property needed to complete the right of way for Kapi'olani Boulevard improvements from King to McCully streets.

1930: Bowing to the authority of the territorial supreme court, the Honolulu board of supervisors turns over the municipality's waterworks to the board of water control created by the Legislature.

1940: Pan American World Airways Clippers set three new firsts: first flight from Los Angeles to Honolulu; first night flight from Midway to Honolulu; and first two-leg jump by a Clipper on the transpacific run.

1943: Coffee, refined sugar and other food subject to rationing on the Mainland cannot be shipped from the territory, the military governor's office says.

1943: Hawai'i's new combat team of 1,500 Japanese-Americans will be trained at Camp Shelby in Mississippi, the military announces.

1959: Bishop Estate says it will sell much of the land needed for a City of Refuge National Historical Park to the Territory for $1.

1967: The City Council votes for an improvement district for the widening of King Street at Ke'eaumoku, which means a banyan tree would have to be removed, touching off an effort by lovers of the tree to have it moved.
