The wedding of C. von Hamm and Bernice Young, daughter of Alexander Young, was front-page news on July 1, 1898.

1911: The first Boy Scouts campout ever held in the Hawaiian Islands concludes in Waipi'o Valley.

1912: Two afternoon English-language newspapers, the Star and the Bulletin, merge and become the Star-Bulletin with Wallace Rider Farrington as business manager.

1924: Samuel Mills Damon dies at the age of 79 at his home in Moanalua Gardens.

1925: The Matson ship Malolo is destroyed by fire while it is being built. The fire starts when a red-hot rivet falls on an oil-soaked board shipway.

1926: Sixty-five barrels of oil are spread on the mosquito swamps near the Ala Wai, the city's sanitary chief reports. The city had been beset by swarms of mosquitos after recent heavy rains.

1941: Honolulu Rapid Transit System ends its trolley system, replacing streetcars, which had been in service for 40 years, with electric trolleys and buses. The last streetcar run was on the Kaimuki-Kalihi route.

1961: Haleakala National Park is dedicated. It is the nation's 30th national park. The mountain was shrouded with mist and rain during the ceremony.

1962: The Advertiser and the Honolulu Star-Bulletin begin publishing a jointly produced Sunday paper.

1970: The new law establishing collective bargaining for state employees goes into effect. Gov. Burns hailed it as "the most progressive labor legislation for public employees in the nation."

1985: Castle & Cooke's stockholders approve a merger with David Murdock's Flexi-Van Corp. of New York. Murdock becomes chairman of Castle & Cooke. C&C subsidiary Lanai Co. files for rezoning of the Manele-Hulopo'e Bay area and Ko'ele near Lanai City, proposing major hotel and housing projects.

1999: The Navy closes Barbers Point Naval Air Station, which had been in operation for 57 years, and hands over 2,100 acres of the property to the state and community.
