Forget hushed walks through a gallery. The Contemporary Museum explodes outdoors with its annual ArtSpree on Saturday.

The museum's tranquil rolling lush grounds will turn into a bustling family hot spot with hands-on art workshops with noted local artists, live music, and offbeat performance art by groups such as The Mermaids, right, a synchronized swim troupe.

If you don't have kids, ArtSpree is still worth checking out — you can see the current show, "Alimatuan: The Emerging Artist as AmericanFilipino," and Paul Morrison's striking poolside installation "gamodeme" for free.

In the music lineup will be jazz guitarist Shoji Ledward, slack-key guitarist Jeff Peterson, chamber music from Terra Nova, a show-tune mix from the Hawaii Opera Theatre and human beatbox Mikee Mic.

In addition, there will be dance, slam poetry and even a number from the Broadway show "Cats."

And if you're hungry, Contemporary Café chef Adam Gilbert has created a special ArtSpree menu.
