Princess Ka'iulani was in one scene of a motion picture that was to be an illustrated lecture of the Islands, The Advertiser reported on July 2, 1898.

1856: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser begins publication.

1881: Charles Harris, chief justice of the Supreme Court of Hawai'i and chancellor of the kingdom, dies.

1899: Queen Kapi'olani's funeral is held at Kawaiaha'o Church.

1916: A $10,000 Wurlitzer pipe organ installed at the Liberty Theater has proven to be "an innovation for motion picture shows," The Advertiser reports.

1936: Aviator Amelia Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan disappear on a flight from Lae, New Guinea, to Howland Island.

1946: Five hundred enlisted men and officers of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team are given a hero's welcome in New York. They arrived on the transport ship Wilson Victory. As the ship moved up the Hudson, the Army band aboard the escorting tug played Hawaiian songs.

1968: Maui County Chairman Elmer Cravalho says the presence of hippies on Maui is causing more unrest in the community than any event since World War II. He says there are about 100 hippies on the island.
