Lee misses making U.S. World Team

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu's Stephany Lee lost in her bid to make the U.S. World Wrestling Team, falling to two-time World champion Kristie Marano Friday night in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Marano swept Lee in the two-match final of the 72kg (158.5-pound) division to clinch a berth on the U.S. World Team for the eighth time, but first since 2003.

Marano came out aggressively against Lee, a 2002 Moanalua High graduate and past World University champion. Marano rolled to a 6-0 first-period win before pinning Lee in the second period. Lee fought gamely in the second bout, but Marano neutralized her in a 2-0, 1-0 victory.

Lee reached the finals after beating 2005 World champ Iris Smith in the Challenge Tournament earlier in the day.

Another Hawai'i wrestler, 1999 Roosevelt High graduate Clarissa Chun, still has a shot to make the World Team at 48kg (105.5 pounds). Chun, the U.S. Nationals champion, will face Mary Kelly at a later date.

Chun has a knee injury and is permitted to wrestle-off at a later date by virtue of winning the U.S. Nationals.
