Man gets 10 years for driving drunk, killing pedestrian

By KEN KOBAYASHI

A 27-year-old Wai'anae man was sentenced to a maximum 10-year prison term today for driving drunk and killing a pedestrian who was walking along the shoulder of Farrington Highway near Lualei Place in Wai'anae in January last year.

The lawyer for Dewayne Asuega asked Circuit Judge Virginia Crandall to place him on probation and sentence him to a year in jail for the death of Marcus Chong, 36, but Crandall noted Asuega had a 1999 conviction for drunken driving.

Crandall granted the prosecution's request for her only other option, the maximum 10-year sentence.

Asuega's blood alcohol content after he hit Chong was .14, which is above the .08 legal limit for drunken driving.

The Hawai'i Paroling Authority will later set the minimum term Asuega must serve before he is eligible for release on parole.
