UH signs lineman from California

Joey Lipp, an offensive lineman from Chino (Calif.) High School, has accepted a football scholarship from the University of Hawai'i.

"I'm excited about going out there," said Lipp, who will compete in the Warriors' training camp next month.

Because Lipp committed after the spring signing period, he signed a scholarship agreement with the Warriors. Such a document means the Warriors must reserve a scholarship for Lipp.

Lipp, who is 6 feet 3 and 265 pounds, was an offensive tackle for Chino. "I'm not sure where I'll end up (playing at UH)," he said.

He was named to the All-Sierra League first team. He also was invited to compete in the Inland Empire Classic, a game matching all stars from San Bernardino and Riverside.

Lipp also was named his school's winner of the Principal's Award for academics. His cumulative grade-point average is 3.7, and he has received a qualifying score on the SAT.
