  • Honolulu entertainer SONYA MENDEZ has been elected president of the Rotary Club of Kapolei. She will oversee club public relations and development, including for the annual Taste of Kapolei in September and Rotary Rocks!, a music and educational festival. Mendez also will work with the Hawaiian Telcom Great Aloha Run as director of development. Mendez has performed locally and nationally since the 1970s with the Carole Kai Show, Sonya and Revolucion and the Honolulu Pops Symphony, and as opener for national acts such as Tower of Power and Gloria Estefan. Mendez is the 2006 Hawaii Music Foundation's Female Vocalist Legacy Award recipient.

  • Internationally recognized cancer researcher Dr. Michele Carbone — who has spent a major part of his scientific career researching chest and abdominal cancers, especially those associated with asbestos — has joined the Cancer Research Center of Hawai'i. The center, a research unit of the University of Hawai'i-Manoa, is one of only 61 National Cancer Institute-designed cancer centers in the nation. Carbone's research laboratory will be in the UH Biomedical Research Building, part of the John A. Burns School of Medicine complex in Kaka'ako. He will serve as director of the new Thoracic Oncology Program and associate director of the Basic Sciences program. He also will be lead investigator of two National Cancer Institute grants investigating the relationship of asbestos to mesothelioma. Carbone, also an anatomic pathologist, was most recently professor at Loyola University Medical Center's Cardinal Bernadin Cancer Center in Chicago.

  • TOD FUJIOKA, a veteran of the information technology industry who served as network supervisor of the Gemini 8M Telescopes Project on Mauna Kea and in Chile, has been named director of management information services for Shriners Hospitals for Children-Honolulu. Before joining Shriners, Fujioka was operations manager of information services at St. Francis Healthcare Systems of Hawai'i. Since 1923, Shriners has provided free orthopedic care to more than 23,000 children from Hawai'i and the Pacific Basin.

  • U.S. Coast Guard veteran and qualified marine inspector Michael MacDonald has been hired as manager of safety, quality and environmental protection for interisland shipper Young Brothers Ltd. and Hawaiian Tug & Barge. He will travel on the vessels to oversee safety requirements, compliance and standards, and will conduct training and internal audits. He is an eight-year veteran of the Coast Guard, served 1988 to 1996 with the U.S. Marine Corps, and is a veteran of Desert Storm and Somalia military actions. He also has experience in ship engineering and maintenance. Young Brothers provides cargo service statewide, with ports on O'ahu, Maui, Moloka'i, Lana'i, Kaua'i and the Big Island. Hawaiian Tug and Barge provides contract towing service, ship assists, barge charters and related marine services statewide.

  • SCOTT ASHWORTH, the Professional Golf Association head golf professional at Ka'anapali Golf Courses for the past three years, has been promoted to a specially created position of PGA director of golf. The promotion includes the added responsibilities of merchandising, sales, marketing, budgeting and agronomics. It comes at a time when the courses are undergoing a three-year, $13 million renovation. Ashworth is the past head golf professional for three Marriott U.S. properties: Ko Olina Golf Club in Kapolei and properties in Florida and Washington state. He was named Head Golf Professional of the Year 2005 by the Bill Casper Golf Management Co., owner/operator of more than 60 golf courses nationwide.

  • D.R. Horton-Schuler Division has announced two major company promotions, following a company reorganization. The company has merged its community planning, land development and land acquisition departments into two entities — O'ahu and Neighbor Islands. Named new vice president of development for the O'ahu group is BOB BRUHL. TRACY NAGATA, a 13-year veteran of the architectural and planning profession, will lead the Neighbor Island group and serve as a vice president of development.
