1911: Gerrit P. Wilder plants the first 100 coconut trees at Fort Armstrong in the first part of a civic effort to beautify Honolulu's waterfront.
1919: Two Army planes carry mail interisland in the first air mail delivery in the Islands. Copies of The Advertiser were also delivered by air mail for the first time interisland.
1923: The Advertiser reports that Hawaiian Dredging Company has begun work on the dredging of the 1,000-foot channel from Honolulu Harbor toward Kalihi basin. The Kalihi Reserve Channel was to be dredged to a depth of 33 feet.
1930: The Kolekole Pass road opens.
1953: The "Hawaii 7," who were convicted of conspiring to advocate and teach the overthrow of the U.S. government, are sentenced. Six are given five-year terms and one is sentenced to three years. The convictions were eventually overturned. Six served a week of their prison terms and then were bailed out. Jack Hall didn't serve any of the prison term.
1959: Sen. John F. Kennedy arrives in the Islands. The presidential candidate was the keynote speaker at the Democratic Party's Independence Day function.
