Michelle Wie breezed to a 5 and 3 victory over Candy Hannemann Thursday in the opening round of the HSBC Women's World Match Play Championship at Hamilton Farm in Gladstone, N.J.

The 16-year-old Punahou student closed out the match on the 15th hole with a birdie.

Wie will next face Christina Kim in the second round Friday. Kim beat Joo Mi Kim, 2 and 1, in their first-round match Thursday.

Yesterday, Wie, the No. 2 seed, trailed early in her match against the 63rd-seeded Hannemann, but reeled off five birdies in six holes to rally.

Wie reeled off birdies on Nos. 6 through 9 and on No. 11 to take the lead over Hannemann, who led 2-up after three holes. Hannemann bogeyed the fourth hole and double bogeyed the fifth hole to make the match even. Wie began her birdie run on No. 6.

Early in the round, Wie opened with a bogey while Hannemann parred the first hole and birdied the second for a 2-up lead. Both players parred No. 3 and Wie parred the fourth as well, while Hannemann bogeyed the hole. Hannemann followed her bogey on No. 4 with a double bogey on No. 5 to even the match. Wie parred No. 5, then went on her birdie run.

The Round of 16 and quarterfinals will be held Saturday and the semifinals and finals Sunday.
