1898: The U.S. Senate passes the treaty that annexes Hawai'i to the United States. Word was received in Hawai'i on July 13 when the Pacific Mail S.S. Coptic arrived off Waikiki and signaled the word ashore.
1905: The county Board of Supervisors votes to take control of the Royal Hawaiian Band.
1912: Duke Kahanamoku sets a world record for the 100-meter dash in swimming in the Stockholm Olympics.
1927: Halema'uma'u erupts. The Advertiser reported that the bottom of Halema'uma'u is "practically covered with fire."
1930: A fire sweeps through the town of Pa'ia on Maui, leaving 150 people homeless and 15 businesses destroyed. The fire was deliberately set.
Correction: The U.S. Senate passed a resolution in 1898 to annex Hawai'i to the United States. That was not clear in a previous version of this article.
