The grand jury system is to be set up in the Islands now that Hawai'i is a territory of the United States, the July 6, 1900, Pacific Commercial Advertiser reported.

1887: King Kalakaua signs the "Bayonet Constitution," which sharply limits his power. The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reported that the marshal of the kingdom rode around the principal streets of the city proclaiming the new constitution.

1898: The U.S. Senate passes the treaty that annexes Hawai'i to the United States. Word was received in Hawai'i on July 13 when the Pacific Mail S.S. Coptic arrived off Waikiki and signaled the word ashore.

1905: The county Board of Supervisors votes to take control of the Royal Hawaiian Band.

1912: Duke Kahanamoku sets a world record for the 100-meter dash in swimming in the Stockholm Olympics.

1927: Halema'uma'u erupts. The Advertiser reported that the bottom of Halema'uma'u is "practically covered with fire."

1930: A fire sweeps through the town of Pa'ia on Maui, leaving 150 people homeless and 15 businesses destroyed. The fire was deliberately set.



Correction: The U.S. Senate passed a resolution in 1898 to annex Hawai'i to the United States. That was not clear in a previous version of this article.
