Wie beats Christina Kim, to play Pak

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu's Michelle Wie defeated LPGA pro Christina Kim 3 and 2 Friday in the second round of the HSBC Women's Match Play Championships at Hamilton Farm Golf Club, N.J.

Leading 2 up going into the 16th hole, Wie recorded a par-4 while Kim bogeyed.

Wie will play Se Ri Pak Saturday in the Round of 16. Quarterfinal matches will follow.

Semifinal matches and the final will be held Sunday.

All are scheduled for 18 holes.

Wie and Kim were all square after nine holes, but Wie then made successive winning birdies on the par-5 11th and par-3 12th to go two holes up. Wie bogeyed the par-4 13th, giving a hole back to Kim, but retaining a lead of 1 up.

The Punahou School student then birdied the par-5 14th to go back up by two holes. Both also birdied the par-4 15th hole.

Wie had a 2-up lead through three holes after she birdied the second and Kim bogeyed the third.

But Kim rattled off three consecutive birdies on holes No. 5-6-7. Wie matched the sixth hole with a birdie of her own, but Wie bogeyed the eighth giving Kim the hole and a 1-up lead.

Wie tied the match with a birdie on the par-5 ninth.

In match play, golfers go head to head with the golfer recording the better score on a hole winning the hole. If both record the same score, no one wins the hole.

Wie's 3-and-2 winning score meant she won three more holes than Kim with two holes left to play.

Matches usually are scheduled for 18 holes.
