A man and a woman were found shot to death at the scenic Round Top Drive lookout last night, another man later died of gunshot wounds, and police combed Makiki Heights for suspects in the triple homicide.

Officers had arrested one man and were searching for more suspects in the Tantalus area late last night. Round Top Drive remained closed as of 11 p.m.

The victims were identified only as being 50 to 60 years old, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Department of Emergency Services. Police Capt. Frank Fujii declined to say whether the victims were residents or tourists.

Police received a 911 call at 7:15 p.m. of a possible robbery at the lookout and arrived to find the first two victims, who had been killed with a pistol, Fujii said.

The other man died at The Queen's Medical Center shortly before 10 p.m., Cheplic said.

The victims appeared to be connected to the same car but Fujii declined to say whether the bodies were found inside or outside the vehicle.

Investigators last night were considering the possibility that the victims were killed during an attempted carjacking, said police sources, who asked not to be identified because the investigation was continuing.

Within a few minutes of the 911 call, police received a separate report of a burglary at a home on the 3700 block of Round Top Drive where the residents were home at the time, Fujii said. Police arrested a suspect, but Fujii emphasized that he was being questioned only in connection with the alleged burglary rather than the shootings.

Police sources said investigators are considering the possibility that another suspect also may have been involved.

Police later opened an investigation of first-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and improper place to keep a firearm.

A resident who was home at the time the house was burglarized said police asked him not to talk to the news media.

Police lost the initial connection to the 911 caller and asked the person to call back to possibly provide more information.

For the rest of the night, police closed Round Top Drive to incoming traffic and searched every vehicle coming out. A police helicopter hovered above as officers searched the area with flashlights.

Kathleen and Jean Leduc gave up trying to leave their Round Top home to see the new Superman movie and instead locked themselves inside, listening to the sound of police and EMS sirens.

"We were going to go out but the road is blocked off," Kathleen Leduc said.

Round Top residents watched the manhunt play out from their windows and on the TV news.

Richard and Grace Hiyane live above the lookout. They said they heard sirens and a police helicopter.

Katherine Tyson locked herself in her home but didn't know what was going on outside.

"Nobody's called me," she said.
