Prince Tu'ipelehake and Princess Kaimana of Tonga were planning to make a trip to Hawai'i later this month, said Annie Kaneshiro, honorary counsel for Tonga in Honolulu.

"He was a farmer and very low-key whenever he was here," she said of the prince. "He'll definitely be missed."

Tu'ipelehake, chairman of the Tonga National Committee on Political Reform, had visited Hawai'i many times, she said.

"He did good a job of trying to listen to what people were saying and finding out the will of the people," said The Rev. Dr. Langi Fine, pastor at the First Tongan United Methodist Church in Honolulu.

"His loss is a very sad thing because he was reaching out to the people and seeing if there could be some sort of government reform."

There are 5,988 Tongans living in Hawai'i, according to the 2000 Census.
