Wie, Sorenstam fall in Women's Match Play quarterfinals

Advertiser Staff

LPGA professional Brittany Lincicome defeated Honolulu's Michelle Wie, 4 and 3, Saturday in a quarterfinal of the HSBC Women's Match Play Championships at Hamilton Farm Golf Club in Gladstone, N.J.

Lincicome, the No. 39 seed, advanced to Sunday's semifinals against No. 3 Lorena Ochoa, who beat Sophie Gustafson, 3 and 2. In the other semifinal, No. 5 Paula Creamer meets No. 8 Juli Inkster, who rallied to top No. 1 Annika Sorenstam, 1-up. The finals will be held later Sunday. The 16-year-old Wie was the No. 2 seed in the tournament.

"I played solid, just had a lot of bad breaks," Wie said in an interview on CBS TV. "A lot of wedge shots that could have been a lot closer; a lot of putts that could have gone in, but I feel like I played really solid today."

Creamer defeated No. 4 Karrie Webb, 3 and 2, in the quarterfinals.

Lincicome took a 1-up lead by winning the par-4 first hole with a birdie, but Wie tied it by winning the par-3 third hole with her only birdie on the front nine. Lincicome made consecutive birdies on the fourth and fifth holes, both par-4s, for a 2-up lead.

With a birdie on the par-4 10th, Lincicome moved to 3-up. She went 4-up when Wie missed a par putt on the par-4 13th and conceded the hole. A birdie by Wie on the par-5 14th hole, cut Lincicome's lead to 3-up.

Lincicome sealed the victory on the par-4 15th hole. Wie conceded the hole after she missed a long putt for par, putting Linicicome 4-up with three holes remaining.

Wie earned $50,000 for reaching the quarterfinals. The winner gets $500,000. Wie plays in the PGA Tour's John Deere Classic starting Thursday at East Moline, Ill.

In other quarterfinal matches, Ochoa defeated Gustafson, 3 and 2

Earlier Saturday, Wie defeated Se Ri Pak, 2 and 1, early Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals.

Wie, the No. 2 seed in the event, trailed only once in her match against No. 15 Pak: after the first hole. But Wie quickly tied the match with a birdie on the par-5 second hole.

Wie was 1 up after nine holes, winning the par-4 eighth hole with a birdie.

The match was all square after Wie bogeyed the par-4 10th. But she regained the lead by winning the next hole with a birdie on the par-5 11th.

Wie went 2 up after 14 holes after a birdie on the par-5 14th. But Pak came back with a birdie on the par-4 15th.

Wie maintained a 1-up advantage as both parred the 16th. But on the 17th, Wie recorded a par-3 while Pak bogeyed, ending the match.

Pak had been on a hot streak recently, winning the LPGA Championship and finishing tied with Wie for third at the U.S. Women's Open.

In match play, golfers go head to head with the player recording the better score on a hole winning the hole. In Wie's match against Pak, the match ended after the 17th hole because Wie won two more holes than Pak throughout the round with only one hole left to play, hence a 2-and-1 score.
