Kono 7th, Fujikawa 8th in junior golf tourney

Stephanie Kono moved up a spot to seventh and Tadd Fujikawa dropped back a spot to eighth in the second round of the Rolex Tournament of Champions yesterday. The American Junior Golf Association tournament ends tomorrow at Hiwan Golf Club in Evergreen, Colo.

Kono, who will be a junior at Punahou, shot 3-over-par 73. She is at 145 at the halfway point. Ashleigh Simon of South Africa moved into the girls' lead at 141 with a second-round 68.

Arizona's Philip Francis fired a 65 to take over first in the boys' division. He is at 4-under 136. Fujikawa, a Moanalua sophomore, is six back after another 71.

ALOHA SECTION PGA PRO CHAMPIONSHIP ON MAUI

A field of 35 tee off in the Aloha Section PGA Professional Championship Monday at Makena's South Course on Maui. Makena's Brian Sasada is defending champion in the $12,000 event.

The Aloha Section PGA's third major championship of the year also is a 36-hole qualifier for three spots in the 40th PGA Professional National Championship, June 21 to 24 of next year at Sunriver Resort in Oregon.

Last year Sasada, Kevin Hayashi and Paul Ito qualified. All are in this year's field, along with Mark Seki, Scott Bridges and Dugal Milne of Makena, and recent Kapalua Clambake champion Kevin Carll.

Play begins at 7 a.m. Monday and Tuesday.

The winner also gets $2,500 as well as points towards Governor's Cup selection and Section PGA Player of the Year.

The low 20 at the $500,000 PGA Professional National Championship earn berths in the 89th PGA Championship, Aug. 6 to 12, 2007, at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.


SURFING

HAWAI'I WOMEN OUSTED FROM LONGBOARD MEET

Hawai'i surfers Crystal Dzigas, Janna Irons and Joy Magelssen were eliminated from the Roxy ASP Women's World Longboard Championship yesterday.

The fourth and fifth rounds were completed in 2-foot waves at Biarritz, France.

Dzigas lost in the fourth round, and Irons and Magelssen lost in the fifth round. They were the only Hawai'i surfers remaining in the contest.

Irons needed a score of 5.86 to advance in the closing minutes of her heat, but came up short with a 4.9 on her final wave. Magelssen needed a 5.85 to advance out of her heat, but received a 3.15 on her final wave.

The final day of competition is expected to run today. It is the first time the Association of Surfing Professionals is sanctioning a world championship for women's longboarding.


VOLLEYBALL

ASICS RAINBOWS SECOND IN JUNIOR OLYMPICS

Asics Rainbows' 16 team took it to the limit before settling for silver at the USA Volleyball Girls Junior Olympic Championships earlier this week in Atlanta.

Asics survived tie-breaking procedures in the first two rounds and won all-or-nothing games in the quarterfinals and semifinals to reach the National Gold Division championship match against Dunes 16 Black from the Hoosier Region. Asics won the first game, 25-12, and reached match point three times in the second. But Dunes rallied to win the final games 30-28 and 15-11 to collect the gold medal.

Asics' Sydney Yogi, Cheyanne Keanini and Samantha Misa earned all-tournament honors.

Asics won the 15-under National Division championship last year in Salt Lake City.

DOMINICANS DEFEAT U.S. WOMEN FOR THIRD

The U.S. women's national team dropped a 25-18, 25-22, 25-20 match to the Dominican Republic last night in the Pan American Cup third-place match. The Americans were also fourth last year.

Former Rainbow Wahine All-American Heather Bown had seven points for the U.S., which is set by McKinley graduate Robyn Ah Mow-Santos, another former UH All-American. The U.S. squad was victimized by 13 service errors in the defeat.

The U.S. is ranked fifth in the latest FIVB world rankings, the Dominican Republic is 11th.

The U.S., Brazil, Cuba and the Dominican Republic have qualified for the 2007 World Grand Prix. The top three NORCECA teams and the top South American team at this year's Pan American Cup earned bids to next year's Grand Prix.

NEVADA TO HOST SOCCER, VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENTS

Western Athletic Conference commissioner Karl Benson officially announced yesterday that Nevada would host the WAC soccer and volleyball tournaments this year. The decision was made based on bids received from the WAC's member schools and a vote from the WAC Council.

The women's soccer tournament will be Nov. 2, 3 and 5, at Nevada's Mackay Stadium. The top six finishers in the regular-season standings qualify.

The women's volleyball tournament is Nov. 22 to 24 at the school's Lawlor Events Center. All nine teams in the WAC make up the field. Hawai'i has won the past six WAC tournament titles.


HONORS

UH WATER POLO PLAYERS ON ALL-AMERICA TEAMS

University of Hawai'i women's water polo players Iefke Van Belkum, Kelly Mason, and Meike De Nooy earned 2006 American Water Polo Coaches Association All-America honors.

Van Belkum, who was the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation's Player of the Year, was selected to the first team. The utility player led the team with 70 goals.

Both De Nooy, a junior goalie, and Mason, a freshman utility, were named to the third team.

De Nooy had a career-high 8.33 saves per game in 2006. Mason was second on the squad this season in scoring with 64 goals.

Hawai'i finished this season 18-12 and placed fourth at the NCAA Championship.

CATALANO, LINDGREN NAMED TO HALL OF FAME

Patti Catalano Dillon, the only woman to win four Honolulu Marathons in a row, and Hawai'i resident Gerry Lindgren, who won 11 NCAA titles, will be induced into the National Distance Running Hall of Fame tomorrow in Utica, N.Y.

Marty Liquori, one only four high school runners to break four minutes for the mile, also will be inducted.

Dillon, who lives in New London, Conn., set course records each time she won the Honolulu Marathon women's titles from 1978 to 1981. She was the first American woman to break the 2-hour, 30-minute barrier in the 26.2-mile marathon distance at the 1980 New York City Marathon. She also held a world record at 20 kilometers.

Lindgren, competing for Washington State, won 11 out of 12 NCAA events, which included the 3-mile, 6-mile, 2-mile indoor and cross country. He is the first American to win a distance event in a Soviet Union/United States meet.

Lindgren joined the University of Hawai'i as an assistant track coach last season.

UH PITCHER DALY EARNS FRESHMAN TEAM HONOR

University of Hawai'i right-handed pitcher Matt Daly received second-team freshman All-America honors from rivals.com.

In June, Daly earned Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball.

Daly finished with a 6-2 record and 3.25 ERA with 52 strikeouts in 52 2/3 innings. He started two games while making 20 relief appearances, second-most on the team. He had one save.

KAMEHAMEHA'S FRIEL COMMITS TO BYU

Kamehameha Schools tight end Kaneakua Friel has made a oral commitment to accept a football scholarship from Brigham Young University starting in 2007, according to his father, Tom.

Friel, 6 feet 4 and 221 pounds, will enter his senior season at Kamehameha next month. He also received interest from Utah, Utah State, Oregon, Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico State.

Friel was named "Outstanding Tight End" at the All Poly Camp and BYU Camp in Utah last month. Tom Friel said his son was timed in the 40-yard dash at 4.63 seconds and did 15 bench press repetitions of 185 pounds.

The Friels are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which sponsors BYU.

Recruits cannot sign binding National Letters of Intent until February.

SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING



HAWAI'I CLUB COMPETES IN OCEANIA GAMES

The Hawai'i Synchro Club has selected an all-star team to compete in the Oceania Games in Brisbane, Australia, July 13 to 17.

It will be the first time Hawai'i will be represented in synchronized swimming in these Games.

The team will hold a free public demonstration today at 2 p.m. at the Central O'ahu pool and tomorrow at 3 p.m. at the Nu'uanu YMCA.

The synchronized swimmers will compete in solo, duet, team combo (eight) and figures (individual) events.

Hawai'i junior team members are Brianna D'Amico (17), Savannah Forrester (16), Claire Friesen (16), Samantha Larose (16), Lauren Nicholson (14) and Paige Ramsey (15).

Senior team members are Mary Ramsey (19) and Susie Rodenkirchen (31).

The coaches are Lianne Cameron-Vrielink and Lisa Velez.
