SURFING
Californian longboard champ

Advertiser Staff

Schuyler McFerran of California won the inaugural Roxy ASP Women's World Longboard Championship yesterday.

The final day of the four-day event was completed in 1- to 3-foot waves at Biarritz, France.

McFerran defeated fellow California surfer Jennifer Smith in the one-on-one final, 15.5-9.85.

Hawai'i surfers Janna Irons and Joy Magelssen tied for ninth place.

It was the first time the Association of Surfing Professionals sanctioned a women's world championship for longboard surfing. All competitors in the event had to use surfboards at least nine feet long.
